Chapter Twelve

For Ivy, things seemed strange.

It wasn’t like she felt Michelle hated her, but there was some sort of unexpressed feeling coming off of her.

She tried to ask about it, but she wasn’t totally sure.

It annoyed her to know that Michelle was hiding something, whatever it was. Maybe Michelle would tell her, but it seemed like it was something she was keeping to herself.

But Ivy continued to dance. Thankfully she hadn’t seen him around. Maybe Tristan finally left town. That would be a good thing. But she also felt like there was something else going on here too.

Ivy continued dancing. She knew that was the best thing for her. But she did look into possibly going back to school and seeing if she could somehow balance both. Of course, that wasn’t an easy feat.

One night, on a pretty quiet stage, Ivy noticed that Ashley was sitting around, watching the other women. Ivy felt like she needed to latch onto something, or someone who could help her figure out her feelings. She waved toward her, and then, Ashley smiled.

“Hey there,” she said.

“Hey. I guess tonight’s pretty quiet?”

“Yes, but some of your regulars are here. Maybe you should take care of them,” Ashley said.

“Of course. I wouldn’t mind leaving early tonight. I sort of want to see Michelle,” Ivy explained.

“Is something the matter?”

Ivy pursed her lips. Would Ashley understand? Probably because she was one of those types of women who seemed to get it better than most.

“It’s a few things,” she started.

“Tell me. I’m not going to be mad at you?” she said.

“Well, I’m worried I’m bothering Michelle. She’s been doing so much for me, but when I try to talk to her, she feels distant,” Ivy explained.

“Oh hell. You didn’t make her angry, did you?”

“No, she’s the type to explain when she’s upset. I think she’s fine,” Ivy told her.

“I guess maybe she’s thinking about it too. Maybe this relationship is making her question things,” Ashley pointed out.

“Question things? Like what?”

“I don’t know. Maybe her feelings are deeper than she realized. And maybe you’re showing her that she can have these feelings,” she said to Ivy.

Ivy paused, figuring out what she meant.

“You mean she wants to take it seriously, but she’s hesitant?”

“Bingo. There’s probably something there, something meaty. I can assure you that if it’s bothering her, she’s probably struggling to express it,” Ashley explained.

“What do I do then? Do I confront her on it?”

“No way. Don’t do that until you’re ready. I’d say for now show her that you mean it, and that you do want to be there for her. She’s prob ably got a lot on her mind, and she has no clue how to feel about it,” she said.

“You and me both,” Ivy muttered.

“Come now, what else is bothering you honey? It’s clear that this isn’t it,” she said.

What should she do? Should she explain what’s going on to Ashley and hope that she understands.

“I’ve been thinking about my future. The career that I have, and what I want to do with it.
